Cover Letter for Freshers: Structure and a Sample
You have no job history to point to, so your cover letter has one job: show that you understand the role and have something relevant to offer.
A fresher cover letter is three short paragraphs on less than one page: why this role and company, the project, internship or coursework that proves you can do the work, and a polite close. Keep it specific to the job rather than reusing one letter everywhere.
Do freshers need a cover letter?
Not always. Many applications on job portals never ask for one. If the posting requests a cover letter, or gives you a place to attach one, write it. If it is optional, a short and specific letter can help a recruiter see why you applied, while a generic one adds nothing. Spend the effort only when you can make it specific.
The three-paragraph structure
- Opening: the role you are applying for, where you saw it, and one sentence on why it fits your degree or skills.
- Evidence: one or two things you have actually done: a final-year project, an internship, a college event you organised, a course you finished. Tie each to something the job posting asks for.
- Close: say you would welcome the chance to discuss the role, mention that your resume is attached, and thank the reader.
Sample cover letter (fictional, for illustration)
Dear Hiring Manager,
I am applying for the Junior Data Analyst position at [Company], which I found on [portal or website]. I completed my B.Sc. in Statistics this year and have been building the SQL and Excel skills your posting lists.
For my final-year project I cleaned a public retail sales dataset, wrote SQL queries to summarise monthly sales by region, and presented the findings in a short dashboard. I also completed a six-week online course in data visualisation. I would like to bring the same careful, step-by-step approach to your reporting work.
My resume is attached. I would welcome the chance to discuss how I can contribute to your team. Thank you for your time.
Yours sincerely,

Mistakes to avoid
- Sending the same letter to every company, or leaving another company's name in it.
- Repeating your resume line by line instead of adding context.
- Starting with "To whom it may concern" when the posting names a recruiter or team.
- Mentioning salary expectations unless the posting asks for them.
- Spelling and grammar errors. Read it aloud once before sending.

How long should a cover letter for a fresher be?
Aim for about 150 to 250 words, three short paragraphs, and well under one page. Recruiters often read quickly, so shorter and specific usually beats longer and general.
Should I attach the cover letter or paste it in the email?
Follow the posting. If it says to attach documents, attach a PDF. If you are applying by email with no instructions, a short, well-written email body can serve as the cover letter, with your resume attached.
What if I have no projects or internships?
Use what you do have: coursework, a college club role, volunteering, a self-taught skill with something you built or practised. Be honest and specific about what you did and learned.
