How Long Should a Resume Be?

One page or two? The answer depends on how much relevant experience you have, and here is the simple rule of thumb.

Quick answer

Keep your resume to one page if you are a fresher or have under about 3 years of experience. With more experience, one to two pages is fine. Only academic, research and medical CVs run longer.

Resume length by experience level

Your situationRecommended lengthWhy
Fresher, student, or under 3 years of experience1 pageThere is not enough relevant history to fill more, and recruiters scan quickly
3 to 10 years of experience1 page, or 2 if you have strong, relevant achievementsOnly extend to page 2 if every line earns its place
10+ years, senior or management roles2 pagesMore scope to cover, but older roles should be short
Academic, research or medical CVNo fixed limitA full record of publications, grants and teaching is expected

Why one page is the safe default

A recruiter looking at a stack of applications spends a short time on each one, so the top third of the first page does most of the work. A tight one-page resume forces you to lead with your strongest, most relevant points. If you find yourself padding to reach page two, the extra content is probably hurting more than helping.

When a second page is fine

If you do use two pages, fill the second page properly rather than leaving three lines on it, and make sure your name and contact details appear at the top of page one.

How to shorten a resume that is too long

  1. Cut jobs older than about 10 to 15 years down to one line (title, company, dates), or remove them if they are not relevant.
  2. Keep 3 to 5 bullet points for recent roles and 1 to 2 for older ones.
  3. Delete duties, keep results. "Responsible for reports" can go; "Cut monthly report time from two days to four hours" stays.
  4. Remove filler: "References available on request", an objective that says nothing specific, and skills everyone assumes (like "MS Word" for an office job).
  5. Tighten the layout, not the font. Keep body text at a readable size (around 10 to 12 pt) and margins of roughly half an inch to one inch.

What about freshers?

If you are a fresher, one page is the right target. Put education, projects, internships and skills first, because they are your strongest evidence. Our resume format for freshers guide shows the section order, and the free ATS checker will tell you whether the final file is still easy to read.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a resume be?
For most people, one page. Freshers and anyone under about 3 years of experience should keep to one page. Candidates with 10 or more years of experience, or senior roles, can use two. Academic CVs have no fixed limit.

Is a 2-page resume bad?
No. A two-page resume is fine when you have enough relevant experience to justify it. It becomes a problem when the second page is mostly filler or older, irrelevant roles.

What font size should a resume use?
Body text around 10 to 12 pt is readable for both people and ATS software. Headings can be a little larger. Avoid shrinking the font below about 10 pt just to fit more in.

Should I include every job I have had?
No. Include the roles that are relevant to the job you want. Older or unrelated jobs can be shortened to one line or left out.
