Quick answer

Open with a summary of your accounting scope and tools (Tally, GST, TDS, Excel), then list experience with the work you handled, such as reconciliations, returns and month-end closing, followed by education and exam progress like CA Inter. Use scope and accuracy details rather than vague claims.

What accounting employers look for

Accounting roles differ a lot. A small trading firm may want a person who does everything from billing to GST filing. A larger company may want a specialist in payables, receivables or audit support. Your resume should make clear which kind of work you have actually done.

Signals that help

Choose the terms that match your experience and the job post. Do not list a software you only opened once.

Smaller firms often prefer a candidate who can handle a full cycle from voucher entry to return filing, while larger companies may care more about process discipline, documentation and the ability to work with auditors. Read the job post carefully and put the matching experience first.

Format and section order

A one-page, one-column resume suits most accountants up to about five years of experience. Use standard headings so software can read them: Summary, Skills, Experience, Education, Certifications.

  1. Header: name, phone, email, city.
  2. Summary: role, years, tools, compliance area.
  3. Skills: grouped by software, compliance and reporting.
  4. Experience: company, role, dates, bullets.
  5. Education and exams: degree, year, CA/CMA stage with attempts if relevant.

Freshers can lead with education and internship or article training. See resume format for freshers for a layout that fits.

Make the bullets precise

Accounting is a precision job, so precision in your bullets is persuasive. Name the process, the volume or frequency and the control you used. Use numbers only if they are accurate.

GeneralPrecise
Did accounting work in TallyRecorded purchase, sales, receipt and payment vouchers daily in Tally Prime for a company with about 60 active vendors
Filed GST returnsPrepared GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B monthly and matched purchase data with GSTR-2B before filing to reduce input credit mismatches
Handled TDSCalculated TDS on contractor and professional payments, deposited challans on time and prepared quarterly returns
Did bank reconciliationReconciled 4 bank accounts monthly and followed up on unmatched entries before closing

If you do not know the exact filing form for your role, describe the task in plain words rather than guessing. Where you improved something, such as a faster month-end close or fewer reconciliation differences, say how you did it, even if you cannot give a number.

Showing CA Inter and other exams

Many accounting candidates are studying for professional exams. Show your stage honestly and clearly.

If you did articleship, give the firm, the period and the work type: statutory audit, GST, direct tax or internal audit. Keep it factual and avoid exaggerating your responsibilities, because interviewers often ask follow-up questions on exactly what you handled. A short line about the kind of clients (manufacturing, retail, services) helps without breaching confidentiality.

Common mistakes

A short covering email can help too; see cover letter format. Also keep supporting documents such as marksheets, experience letters and certificates ready, since employers may ask for them after the first interview.

Re-read every figure, date and form name once before sending, because accuracy is the first thing an accounting resume gets judged on.

Tally, MS Excel, GST, TDS, reconciliation, month-end closing and audit support, as long as you have actually worked with them.

How do I show CA Inter on my resume?
Write the stage and result clearly, for example CA Intermediate both groups cleared, or one group cleared and the other appearing, with the year.

Tally with GST knowledge is a common starting point for assistant roles. Show it with internship work or practice projects and a certification if you have one.

Yes, briefly. Name the returns you prepared, such as GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B, and whether you did reconciliation, but avoid guessing form names.

How long should an accountant resume be?
One page is enough for most accountants up to five years of experience; senior finance professionals may use two.
